Popkin Marcovich Goldstein, 93, died Saturday, May 3, 2003, in St. Francis in
the Park and Rehabilitation Center, Superior. She
was born in Superior, on Nov. 16, 1909, the daughter of Samuel and Anna
(Binder) Popkin. Susie graduated from Central High School and Superior Normal
School (now UW-S) and taught English before her marriage to Ben. She married
Ben Marcovich in Superior and they were co-owners of Popkin Furniture Company
for over forty years. Following Ben's death she married Oscar Goldstein of
Superior. She was a member of Temple Beth El in Superior. Susie was a
Community leader for many years, having served as president of Hudassah,
Superior Jewish Women's League, United Way of Greater Douglas County and many
other organizations. She was an accomplished pianist, avid reader, gardener
and traveled extensively throughout the world. Susie's sense of humor and
driving skills entertained her family throughout her life. She
was preceded in death by her first husband Ben Marcovich; her second husband
Oscar Goldstein; her brother Arnold Popkin; two sisters, Ida Lurye and
Jeanette Popkin. She
is survived by her children, Toby E. (Sharon) Marcovich of Superior, and
Sandra R. Morris of Arvada, Colo.; four grandchildren, Jill M. (Jim)
Bachinski of Superior, Wendy L. (Michael) Wilens of Chicago, Ill., Bridget
(Eric) Virckler of Lakewood, Colo., David Morris of Denver,Colo., and twelve
great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister Rose Rich of Rochester,
Minn.; and a brother Henry R. James Popkin of Scottsdale, Ariz.; one
sister-in-law Annie Popkin of Sun City, Ariz. VISITATION: 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 6, 2003, in the William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home, Superior and continue until the 11 a.m. service with Rabbi Amy Bernstein officiating. Burial at the Hebrew Cemetery in Superior. Memorials may be made to Temple Israel, Duluth, Minn. or the University of Wisconsin-Superior Foundation. |
